Forthcoming Humber Register Events 2008 | |
29th November | Winter Dinner - Much Wenlock, Shropshire |
The Inter-Register Club is an association of one-marque car clubs for pre-war cars whose sole purpose is to run a series of events each year to exercise those cars (and their owners). The club was formed back in the fifties when most single marque clubs realised that they could not raise enough interest within their own clubs to make events like rallies viable. If, however, stalwarts from several clubs banded together, sufficient entries could be raised to make it possible to run these events.
The events, mainly navigation and scatter rallies and driving tests, typically field an entry of twenty plus cars, and are held in various parts of the country. They are mildly competitive, light-hearted, and are intended to be not so intense as the VSCC events, indeed they are an excellent training ground for "proper" VSCC rallies.
Each year the "Inter-Register Shield" is awarded to the best performing marque and trophies are given for the best individual overall performance, best navigator, and the highest placed novice in any single event.
Pre-war cars from any of the following clubs are eligible.
750 Motor Club (Austin 7s) | Humber Register |
Alvis Register | Pre-War Austin 7 Club (PWA7C) |
Austin Ten Drivers Club (ATDC) | Riley Register |
Crossley Register | Sunbeam/Talbot/Darracq Register (STD) |
Fiat Register | Singer Club |
Jowett Car Club |
These Inter Register Events are great fun, and not fiercely competitive. They a marvellous opportunity to drive around countryside you would normally bypass, to see other interesting marques, and in the case of events like the Nightjar, to keep you fit. Why not have a go?
Last year the Humber Register came within a gnat's crotchet of winning the coveted Inter-Register Shield coming just one point behind the Riley Register the winners. Humber won the team prize at no less than 3 of the six events in the year, and our very own Philip Longhurst by winning two of the events and second in a third, came second in the individual championship close behind Duncan Buck of the Riley Register.
There is a very welcome resurgence of interest in the Humber Register for Inter-Register events and I feel strongly that a few more entries, particularly for the more northern events could well ensure a win for Humber of the Inter-Register Shield. In the past Humber were really strong in Inter-Register events winning the Inter-Register Shield no less than 11 times- 1972, 73, 74, 75, 76, 1978, 1981, 82, 1985, 86, and the last time we won it - 1987! Dick Arman won the individual championship twice in those halcyon days.
The first event of the year was the "Easter Egg Hunt" organised by the 750MC Brooklands Centre held on Saturday April 5th, just avoiding the snow the following morning! The event involved following a fixed route after plotting it using the usual navigation rally devices herringbones, spot heights, northings/eastings, directions of departure from junctions etc. Along the 46 mile route competitors had to identify from where 32 photos were taken and find 5 code boards in the shape of an egg, each with the acronym of a breed of chicken. Although cold, the rain/snow held off and hot food welcomed the finishers.

1st RILEY | 2nd HUMBER | 3rd AUSTIN 7 | 4th ALVIS |
Humbers started well with Malcolm Luckhurst comprehensively losing his Novice status.
The Pre-War Austin 7 Club event at Craven Arms, Shropshire, 11th May, was well supported with 6 Rileys, 3 Alvis, 3 Austins, and 3 STD cars, but only 1 Humber - Ian and Gill Webb, who enjoyed the event but were not "in the money". Riley won the team prize.
The Alvis Scatter rally was very poorly attended - five entries only, 4 Alvis, and 1 Riley. No Humbers!
If you would like to have a go at any of the events and haven't let me know already, contact me letting me know which events(s) you are interested in. The remaining events for the year are:-
